Am I entitled to a uniform tax refund?

If you have to wear any kind of uniform or protective clothing at work, and you have to wash it yourself, you may be entitled to a tax refund from HMRC- but this isn’t given to you automatically, you have to claim it.

According to statistics, around 2 in 3 employees who wear a work uniform are eligible for a tax rebate.

If your uniform bears the company logo or is regarded as protective clothing then you could be entitled to make a claim from HMRC covering the last four years.

How much uniform tax refund could I get?

As tax rebate claims can go back up to four years, your total refund could be a significant amount.

For uniform tax refunds under the laundry allowance, the rate depends on the industry you work in.

The standard rate for uniform maintenance and laundry is now £60, so if you pay the basic rate of tax you can claim back 20% of this (£12)  – and higher rate tax payers can claim back 40% (£24). The standard rate of £60 is a ‘flat rate’, so you won’t be required to keep any records or receipts of your expenses related to your uniform.

As you can make a claim for the past four years plus the current year, a basic-rate taxpayer claiming the standard flat rate uniform tax allowance could claim a uniform tax refund of £60 – (5 x £12).

Once you have registered a uniform tax allowance claim you tax code will be changed, so you will pay less tax in the future.

Some occupations have more specific limits, often to do with specialist uniforms, with the maximum allowance of £140.
